Who Knew?

November 21, 2011

If you’re anything like me you can get easily lost distracted when on the internet.  A quick trip to query “what’s the best way to clean my dog’s ears” can turn into 3 hours reading articles and blogs, watching videos and chatting about wildly divergent topics.

Some of these accidental trips down the rabbit hole have turned into lingering fascinations and I’ve found that my google reader or IE Favorites bar is filled with links to an odd mix of stuff.

And after a conversation the other night where I was explaining Genre C (below) to some incredulous friends, I figured it might be fun to list a few “blog genres you had NO idea existed”:

Genre A:  Steampunk – described as “a sub-genre of science fiction, fantasy, alternate history, and speculative fiction,” steampunk has an instantly recognizable aesthetic for décor and attire and many of the aficionados are creative sorts who tinker, build and create costumes, craft and art.  Check out some sites here and here.

Genre B:  Abandoned Buildings – I first got sucked into this genre when a local writer started a blog covering the subject.  My trips around the internet on this topic turned up a few gems along the way including this.

Genre C:  Patriarchal Christianity– wow, this one is uber-fascinating and there are hundreds and hundreds of bloggers in this genre.  These are the ones who encourage being Quiverfull, homeschool their kids to keep them out of the evil government run schools, hold strong anti-feminist beliefs, believe that women are to submit to their husbands and be his ‘helpmeet,’ adhere to modest dress tenets, and endorse the concept of Stay-at-Home Daughters. I’m not going to link to any of the blogs here; I don’t need these folks adding the Schoolhouse to their radar, but read the Bitch Magazine article at the SAHD daughter’s link; it will make your hair curl…

So what about you?  Found any nifty topics, genres or interesting sites?  Care to share?
